Took apart the E9 changer on one of my 70s MSA guitars to clean it. The shaft shows normal minor wear patterns on one section. Would I be correct in assuming that that is the very top section of the shaft where the string pressure pushes down on the cam. There is no wear on the rest of the shaft at all.

My question is where is the best place to rotate that section of shaft wear to when I reassemble the changer.

Would the suggestion be to rotate the shaft to:

the 6:00 setting opposite the original 12:00 wear pattern.

the 3:00 setting towards the neck

the 9:00 setting towards the back of the guitar.

Thanks for the advice.

How about a quarter turn every 30 years? Then replace it in 2096.
Seriously, probably all you really need is the few degrees of rotation it takes to move any flat spot out of that narrow vector that bears the extra friction that caused the wear.
