OK it’s here. My new Rains D10, black sparkle finish. It was a stretch to order this “finish”. Yeah, I know, it’s drum wrap from Precision Drum Co. But I wanted a sparkle, and the silver and gold are too much (we’ll leave those for the Tele’s), and of coarse, colors like red and blue are just plain ugly. This black sparkle is suttle, but when the lights hit it, it pops. It also has a bumpy sort of texture (which, I’ll admit, I wasn’t prepared for) is really cool. It doesn’t show finger prints at all. Also, because of how the laminate met the corners, a chrome strip had to be added at the neck stepdown and the back apron, which is really pretty, and one of a kind.
Now, to the guitar itself. Gary Carpenter called me over to his shop to come pick it up. When I got there, Gary was adjusting the guitar and Corky Owens was drinking beer. Oh, and he was putting the final decal on. This baby was still warm from the oven. I sat down at the guitar. The sustain and tone really blew me away. Gary came over to me with his watch and told me to hit a chord on 6, 8, and 10. He marked his watch and the chord sustained for 45+ seconds. My steel is set up exactly like Gary’s, so it took him no time to tweek it out. I’m looking forward to getting back to work since the holiday break, and next 2 weeks I have 7 gigs to break her in.
Now, to the Rains steel guitar company. Thanks Gary Carpenter, Corky Owens, Bobby Rains for a beautiful instrument. Steel guitars are heirlooms. They will pass down through decades and the era of each builder will have it’s legacy. I highly recommend you grab one of these now, because this era guitar will be sought after.

Congrats Chris. Glad you're happy with the new Rains.

What are the allen screws used for on the top of the guitar? The ones in the third picture down.

Are you sure those aren't split tuners? I think the tension springs are the Phillips Head screws below the nylon tuners. I may be wrong, but I don't think so.

Shes a beaut Chris. I received my Rains on Thurs. They are everything people are saying about the tone and sustain. I let my buddy play it while we compared it to my 70 p/p. I think he's going to try and order one now. I know he went home and put new strings on his. (lol) Enjoy the new guitar.

Tim-I think you are right. The allen screws are for the split tunings and the lower screws are for adjusting the tension.

Several guitars have them, looks like a nice guitar......al

Perfect steel for me 'cause it takes me that amount of time to find the next correct note!

I always appreciate the joy of somebody receiving a new steel and the Rains is receiving great press from a lot of folks.

Enjoy it in good health.

Chris, cool axe! I have an unusual mica finish on my Derby as well. Makes 'em sound better!

Bobby and his crew are building a fine guitar. Nice people too!

Chris that is one very good lookin guitar. I do like my blue RAINS but hey if everyone liked the same colour it would be a dull world. I have had my new RAINS about a month now and people are still commenting on the sound of this guitar. I'm no expert but I think the RAINS is one of the best guitars out there and Bob and the gang are great people to deal with as well. Enjoy your new guitar not that you won't or schould I say can't because how could you not enjoy a RAINS.

Chris,

What a beauty. Dang I wish I had know you were going over there to pick it up. Heck, I'm only 10 min from Carp. Great looking axe. Looking forward to hearing it sometime.

Where did you get the idea of the black sparkle?

Danny

Hey Chris, I noticed in your picture that you're not wearing the steelers horse shoe ring. What's up with that?

I stopped by to visit with Gary & Corky last week and watched this guitar being built. I believe the pictures do not do it justice. This is a fantastic looking guitar with an even better sound. We also timed the sustain and it was over 45 seconds.
