My Katana has a 1/4" balanced direct line out, but it is 1/4" TRS. I want to go out to a normal XLR input on the mixer. I want to be sure what my options are.
1. Put a 1/4" stereo TRS plug on one end of an XLR cable. But then I have to carry that cable around and hope it's long enough for any venue.
2. Make the same thing as above, but only 6" long with a female plug. In effect, making my own TRS to XLR adapter that will work with any XLR cable.
2. Use an adapter I already have that converts an XLR plug to a 1/4" mono plug. This seems like it will work, but I will lose a balanced signal, but with a cable only 20 ft. long running line level, would it really matter. My instinct tells me no,not on a line level.
3. Is a similar adapter available that is TRS to XLR, but would be overkill and not needed for a line level short run. I have never seen one and don't have a source.
4. Run a standard 1/4" guitar cord to a 1/4" input on the mixer. Not crazy about this. Would be a problem in a large venue where the snake or mixer could be a long run.
I would prefer to just use a factory made adapter.
Thank goodness we have tech guys on the forum that are willing to help out on these sort of things. |

Hosa makes an adaptor:

I do not believe that I have used these, but I have other Hosa Products that seem well made. Buy two, they are easy to misplace.

You can get option 2 at monoprice.com for a really good price. That is what I use. Will work with any mic cable.
Hope this helps

Personally, I don't like those kind of adapters hanging off an amp. They are much too easy to be broken if pulled or snagged. I think a "pigtail" style adapter would be safer like this 3 foot one.....

Actually, I'd probably make one up myself out of good mic cable with Switchcraft 1/4 in. right-angle TRS plug and an XLR connectors. I like their reliability. _________________ Best regards,

Mike, thanks. The speaker plug is already sticking out and the amp is a head only, which sits by my side, so I am not too concerned about the plug sticking out, plus the plug from the pig tail would also stick out. I have a little bag with my "stuff" in it, so an adapter would fit right in. I usually make up my own cords also, but it will cost more to buy the needed plugs and pay shipping than I can buy one already made up.I will not be using it very often, so an adapter will be a better way to go. |
