I just found (and took a couple of nanoseconds to reel in) a ca. '66 Fender 800 (S-10) for $toopidcheep tonight. Although the stock catalog description is that these middle-era Fender PSGs are always sunburst, this one is candy apple red, and everything suggests it's an original factory paint job (underside of body, tone volume pot cavity, pedal bar).

(Paging Dr. Jody Carver...)

It has the later changer (but not Sho-Bud era features of any kind); volume pot 304-6608 (tone date blocked by capacitor); yellow/black cloth wiring--apparently not messed with; knobs like on my '67 Tele--not the tall knurled ones of the '50s; Jaguar-style pickup; missing bridge cover; 3 pedals--once had 5 judging by pulleys on undercarriage; drop-in tuner pan. Fender decal on pedal bar has pat no. info in tiny black letters (fuzzy pics don't show this) below gold Fender logo. Serial #00081 stamped into underside of frame

I have some photo links starting with:
http://www.home.earthlink.net/~themusicmotel/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpict ures/fps4599.jpg

(For the rest of the pics, change the "4599" in the URL to 4601, 4602, 4603, 4604 ,4604, 4606, 4607, 4609.)

I'd love to hear from anyone more knowledgeable about Fender PSGs, at least to gauge how rare the CAR paint job is.

[Got the rods unhooked; my previous question deleted.]

Ben.. I imagine Fender certainly would have custom painted a steel for a customer as a special order at one time or another.. CAR was certainly among the most popular "custom" colors in the 60's -70's...

another possibility,it could be a very old re fin, possibly even a factory refin... It was very common in those days for people to send guitars back to Fender for color changes within the first year or two of purchase... not so common today. but there are a LOT of Fender and Gibson guitars out there from the 60's with FACTORY refins... In ANY case, I envy you!!! bob

Skip Edwards posted a picture of a CA Red Fender 800 in a fender catalog. Sure looks like it was available as an option.

Ben, this was brought up a few months ago. One of the mid '60s Fender catalogs shows a red 800, so they probably made a couple in custom colors, though 99% of them were sunburst.

The tall knobs were not used on the single-neck guitars, only the double-necks. All the single necked guitars used the standard (short) chrome knobs used on the Telecaster.

I did not look at the rest of the pics, but if the Fender decal is on the front of the pedal board then the finish is just about sure to be original.

He's got the decal, Bill, so that is a pretty good indication it wasn't refinished. (Decals were hard to get, but available to authorized dealers, so that's not 100%.)

Also, the guitar pictured was drilled for 6 pedals (six pedals were standard for the 800 series), so it's had 3 removed somewhere along the line.

Fender did offer the Custom Duco finishes as an option, but evidently they were pretty rare.

Check the thread under Pedal Steel titled
"Factory colors for Fender pedal steels" from October '05. There's a link to a photo from the 65-66 Fender catalog that shows the steel page with a cool candy-apple red Fender 800.

Thanks for all the illumination. That catalog pic is great! Who knows--that could have been this one before ~ four decades of hard living. (Mine apparently has lost its body/frame logo, I see.) I'm back in LA from the heartland and the Fender should be here in a couple of days. Let's hope my desperate but determined packing job defeats the USPS's most uncivilized tendencies. If so, I'd be happy to show it to the SoCal curious.
