The double-stringed guitars pulled both strings at the same time, and the resulting tuning issues is what eventually killed their popularity. Buddy Charleton used one on a few ET/LL sessions, and that was about the high point of their popularity. A number of other steelers (Rugg, Drake, Webb) tried them too, but they were soon forgotten due to their limited applications and inherent tuning problems.

When it worked, though, it was a hauntingly beautiful sound!

The only one I ever saw was at the Sho-Bud Shop/Store on Broadway. I think it was a Triple~Neck with (1)-16-str. neck & I guess (2)-8-str. necks. I don't remember how many pedals total, but; I think I was told at the time that it was built for Jimmy Day! I think he ended up clipping the strings off with a wire~cutter, even before losening them!

I remember that guitar from my days of sweeping floors at Sho-Bud. It was built for Jimmy Day and was used on several recordings by him as well. I think it had three pedals and two knees originally.
