Im wanting to buy a new GFI in March at the Dallas Show. I want a U12 Ultra. What do you guys (Mike&Sonny) or any one for that matter, what are your thoughts on tuners? I have a Keyless Sierra now and it is my second one but it is getting too heavy to pack around. Im looking for something lighter and good quality as I know the GFI is.
Any Help will be appreciated
Thanks

A GFI keyless is certainly light and compact.
I'm certainly not experienced at all on pedal steel, but I have and very much like the GFI keyless tuner. The tuning knobs are very accessable and very easy to turn by hand (no need for a hex wrench). A phillips screwdriver is needed to re string as opposed to a hex wrench.
This may be trivial, but the screwdriver is a bit easier to use than the wrench, although you could get a ball end hex wrench with a screwdriver handle.
Trivial, like I said. |

I don't remember GFIs at the Dallas show last time, have you heard that they will be there in March? I hope so.

I've got a GFI D-10 with standard tuners...plays real smooth, sounds great, is easy to tune and it stays in tune well. I think you'll be happy with either setup. |

I have a Keyless GFI D10 8+9. I am so spoiled by the keyless head on it that I don't know if I cold ever go back to keyed heads again.
Everytime I change strings on my ZB, I am reminded just how great the GFI keyless is.
Allegedy, the keyless stays in tune better, has better sustain and breaks far fewer strings than the keyed model. Mine certainly excells in all those claims.
I know the the guy I bought it from had a keyed GFI before the keyless and he attests to those claims as well. He didn't like the keyed head at all.
One thing about it, I can change a string faster on a dark stage than I could on anything I've ever owned. I've only broken 2 strings in a year of owning it, and then it was only because they were long overdue for changing.
I guess you know which way I would vote. |

I Have had Both Guitars keyed and keyless and they are both fantastic, but i like the keyless (FOR MY TASTE) the best... I have had a keyless on the road now for 2years and will never look back at a keyed guitar... I love my old sho-bud and emmons... but keyless is the way to go... (AGAIN FOR MY TASTE ) of touch and tone!
Plus i like a very fast guitar... and ALL GFI guitars can be set up for a fast response..

Mike S. said, "Plus I like a very fast guitar..."
This made me laugh as an understatment because Mike really burns it up. (Even if the meaning of "fast guitar" wasn't meant literally.)
I like my GFI keyless but it's my first PSG so put more stock in what these other guys are saying. I agree though that it is very quick and easy to change strings, the guitar holds tune real well, string breakage is rare, and it is a great sounding guitar.

keyless! I believe there are just too many pluses over keyed, although not nearly "enough" to make keyed obsolete, obviously. I would guess that tradition will always keep keyed more popular.

Keyless seems to be the way to go these days with the GFI's. I have been using keyless guitars for years, Kline, Sierra, HMS, and GFI, they all seem to be much easier on string breakage. They hold tune better in most cases I have found. I think you'll be happy with a New GFI Keyless, not to even mention that great GFI tone.

I've owned a lot of keyless steels, and as a keyless player, I would go wtih a Keyless GFI if that were the steel I wanted to get ....Gene has probably the best keyless setup made with his GFI .....Jim |

I'll agree on the GFI keyless tuner......
Best I've owned & played! No wrench needed to tune! Let your fingers do the walking, oops! that's somethin' else, ain't it? |
