I believe that he was backing up John Prine and Steve Goodman to get a record contract in the the early seventies. Slight topic drift I know, but these two had steel on their records.

Pretty schmaltzy - and features a mandolin instead of a steel guitar! Swing it, add a steel guitar and lose the "uh" syllable added at the end of every line and you've got a hit!  |

Frank Sinatra sang about "stars and steel guitars" in his great song "It Happened in Monterrey." But there was nary a steel guitar on the recording.
Didn't matter one whit to me. It's a great performance. Actually most of my favorite music to listen to nowadays doesn't have a steel guitar within miles.
