I saw him on a Lawrence Welk rerun on Saturday.
The show has to have been mid-'50s because one of the singers covered Lonnie Donegan's 'Rock Island Line' The show was, I assume, kept current which would make that 1956.
Buddy M. was playing a really old Stratocaster that appeared to have an anodised pickguard.
I love it when the soloists forget to smile - clearly Welk insisted on this - but then hastily force a fake grin at the camera. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Thanks for posting that; interesting to watch.
I had never heard about Emmons PSGs having a 3-piece neck that slides under the strings so they can't go out of tune. Huh? His comment on this begins at 27:25

Perhaps he meant the fact of the changer, neck and tuner being separate, the way he mentions it is confusing at first. But great to hear Buddy Merrill talk. He was one of my favorites-got every lp he did. I met him around 1998 in Idlewild California, backing up an artist on steel. His tone was wonderful, I thought at first it was Emmons playing. |

I really enjoyed watching that interview with Buddy Merrill..The only reason I watched LW was because Buddy Merrill was on the show..that may have also been true for many other guys who liked Buddy Merrill. His hero was Speedy West..so was mine. |

Loved this!!!
Buddy & I have been "buddies" for quite a few years now... I was lucky enough to do a few gigs with him a few years back, me mostly on bass.. although once we did a twin steel gig!
It's probably as much my fault as anyone's (due to my constantly being overwhelmed with my own life's issues), but I've always found it unbelievable that he is NOT in the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame!?!? I don't think anyone has ever brought the steel guitar into more living rooms than Buddy did with LW!
Here's a pic of the last time I saw him... love him dearly!

Rick Schmidt, you are correct, Buddy Merrill brought the Steel into millions of homes when he played on TV for LW..he was a household name while many of the other pro's were only known to other musicians..Sleepwalk was the only million record seller as far as I know and Santo did that in A6th on a non-pedal Fender Steel... |
