How long should a player/owner expect a company to keep serial number information? I know Reece Anderson could tell you about almost every MSA that was built. Part of knowing if you found that expensive Gibson SG, or 1959 Les Paul, or 1962 Fender Strat is having serial numbers. What if a company changes owners, are they still obligated to keep records? How long?

I needed a printed record of a custom 6 string electric solid body guitar i purchased 10 years ago (i won't mention the company), they claim to have changed ownership, and don't have records for past sales. I needed to prove what i paid for the instrument. And for insurance purposes. What's the norm?

Probably only obligated to the end of any warranty period, though most makers I’m aware of retain S/N records back to day one. Maybe there is something about the transfer of ownership that explains the lack of records?

For the big boys S/N data is often encrypted to help prevent counterfeit production.
