Williams Pedal Steel - Excess Slack Adjustment

I have a wonderful little Williams 400 Series, Keyless S-10.
Tell me, how do you adjust the excess slack out of the reversing knee-levers? I see a threaded rod that runs from the knee-lever over to the cross rod.
There is a small nut that seems to be locking the threaded rod in place. I have loosened the small nut; but, I don't see any way to take up the excess slack.
I thought maybe the threaded rod would turn after loosening the small lock nut, but it doesn't.
What am I missing?
