I just ordered a brand new hard case for it, so won't be able to ship until next week. Small Crack in Mica, I took a photo with the flash so it would show up, otherwise hard to see. Will send a new set of Strings and Tuning wrench.

Thanks Jon,

I think the RKL might lower the 6th string instead, but that is the only one that looks different.

Carter Starter

I was advised that the RKL should raise the 1st and 7th strings to a G. I understand this is STANDARD like the rest of the levers on the Carter. My concern is that I'm not able to follow the online lessons as I'm learning to play. My friend said he could be wrong. I'd sure like to know what's STANDARD.
I also have a problem with the rods being located half way up the pedal instead of back by the pedal board which other steels have. Don't know if they could be relocated.
These issues are keeping me from buying a Carter now. I just sold one because the levers didn't work with standard tablature.
If you could advise me how to change the RKL (if it's not currently STANDARD, and get the rods to the back of the pedals (so I have more room to work the pedals), I would love to buy this steel.
Thank you very much for listening and any advice you could provide.

Set up

Post by Mark Weese »

Hi Gloria

This C-S, depending on early or late model, has a couple basic set-ups.
I.e, the LVR's... if interested, I can send you the information I got from Al Brisco himself.
He was very helpful with getting mine properly set up/tuned up.
I'm a very new C-S owner, and it was a great learning experience to go through it, and get the bugs worked out of it!
Let me know, and I can email them to you.

Good luck!

The chart is THE Carter Starter factory setup. RKL is B-Bb. I would've preferred it to have been a 1 & 7 raise... but that's the way they came.

Thank you all for the information. I agree that the 1 and 7 raise would be better.

I've heard that the B-Bb was put on the Starters because of its frequent use in Jeff Newman's learning material. But, I haven't actually worked out of any of that stuff myself.

The rods can be repositioned. The bellcranks are welded and cannot.

So, can you change to Day setup and put E's lower on RKR?

disclaimer: I have seen the underside but I have never worked on one.

Those conversions would require swapping cross shafts.
A confident and competent technician would probably have little difficulty with this. But I would need more hands-on info (vs. theoretical speculation) before taking that as gospel.

Gordon, man --- sorry for this hijack!
