I enjoyed working on it Jerry and Dawn. My friend Alex Rehfeld who knows EVERYTHING pedal steel
, asked Lloyd Green who played steel on this for me - Lloyd wrote back that it was John Hughey on this session.

So apparently there are (at least) two different versions out there.
When I listened to the one in the OP, I thought I was losing my mind because the steel parts were not at all how I remembered them. But that's because I hadn't heard the "Original Decca Recording" before.
I only knew of this version:

I just did some research, Andy
Seems Cal Smith signed with Pete Drake's First Generation Records label in 1984 and re-recorded all of his earlier hits. Pete was a producer as well as a steel player. Maybe Pete played steel on the re-recordings...
