I guess everybody knows his guitar work with the Hellecasters, Desert Rose Band, his musical diversity, gypsy jazz and many other areas. I was just watching an airing of Michael Johnathan's Woodsongs with Jorgenson's bluegrass band J2B2.
They mentioned his resume included instruments dobro and pedal steel among everything else on the planet.
Anybody have any examples of his pedal steel work? I don't think I ever knew that he played. |

Jerry, I was searching my memory for half an hour on which Elton John album I heard him play steel on one track. It was most probably "The Captain And The Kid". I tried to find it amongst the songs that are all on U- tube. I'm to exhausted to look any longer. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

John played a black single neck Emmons PP when he toured with Elton. He told me that JayDee gave him some instruction on playing steel and no doubt on the mechanics of the PP. Maybe we should see if we can get him to show up for the Dallas show this year?! Think I will reach out to him and see if he has any room in his busy, busy schedule. BTW, John's house has been under severe threat from the wildfires in Ventura County and had to evacuate at one point. Last I heard his house was still intact while his neighborhood burned. _________________ John Brabant

Thanks Joachim. Appreciate your dogged determination to find that!
That rendering from Sir Elton is one I had not heard.
Wish there had been a small steel solo, but it was very nice behind the singing.
I'll look around for some other examples too. |

Elton John with Tammy Wynette, and a little steel. Propably not played by JJ.

I remember him playing steel on a couple Elton John songs (Tiny Dancer)during an Elton John tour in the 90's. Played guitar too of course and saxaphone. |

John McFee played steel on Southern Pacific’s albums. I know he appeared on steel for one or more of Norton Buffalo’s recordings also. I didn’t know John Jorgenson played on any of those records. |

That’s okay, I also often find myself thinking “what would John McFee do here?†Then I remember, oh wait I don’t play that instrument. Or that instrument. Or that one, etc.... |

They’re both such great musicians it isn’t hard to mistake one for the other. _________________ I thought Nashville was the roughest, but I know I’ve said the same about them all.

Yes. They are two great guitarists who, if they chose to do so, could do an entire album of killer instrumental tunes without ever playing their guitars. But they wouldn’t do that to us... would they? They could call it Shut Up And Don’t Play That Darn Guitar Either. |
