I have a Performance D-10 with 9 & 6
I bought it used do not know the year it was made.
The serial # 2101 if anyone has one they bought new & can help me with a date I would appreciate it very much

Larry, I’m not much help to you, and this may be a missed shot in the dark...John Billings at one time worked for Jerry Brightman @ Performance, assembling these fine instruments. He may or may not know? Best of luck to you!
I’d love to see pictures of your guitar. They are quite rare, at least in my part of the world?

Thr reversers are so cool. I'd put a guitar together, and Jerry would string it and set it up, without a tuner. I could drop a hammer on the floor, and Jerry would call out 7 cents flat of D#.

Ed, I only put together about a dozen before Jerry got screwed by a forum former member. He ordered two guitars, and never even opened the boxes, just sent them back. Pressure from other companies I guess But it killed Jerry's finances.
I used to use my Grandfather's Starett tools to measure everything. Jerry and I believed in straight pull. Rip Jerry!

| Jerry & myself had several conversations about the Performance guitars. I'd just started selling his guitars when whatever it was happened. He sent me a S-10D black mica and a red mica D-10 w/ 8 & 5. I sold the red one to a player in Alabama and moved the black one at the same time but don't remember who got it. JB liked the E66 pu's in the guitars. The two I moved for him were two of the best built and sounding guitars I ever saw. I was looking for a special color mica to send JB to have me a D-10 built at my expense to use for promotional purposes at steel shows, etc. The shutdown cancelled that out. But I did make a friend. RIP buddy. |

That's a fact! JB, you have mentioned them before. Built strong. A big contrast to the failure-prone Carter reverser, "Carter Kryptonite." |

| A reverser refers to the mechanism that takes right-wards force of a RKR/LKR and pulls to the left. Reversing mechanism or linkage can be gears or a pivoting link or sprocket and etal. The best have rollers like Rains guitars use(IMHO). Carter guitars can break where two levers redirect the movement, although I've only heard of two complaints here on the Forum(Urban Myth). My Carter had 4 pulls(including 1/2 Stop) on RKR with no problem in 16 years. JS |

The Reversing mechanism is on the Performance Steel I have
has the roller like you said the Rains Steels have.

There is a cross shaft between the 7th & 8th floor pedal
do you know what the purpose is there is no bellcranks on this shaft.
It is very loose in the front & back aprons
[see picture below]
notice how close to the 7th pedal this cross shaft is.

None of the guitars that I assembled had that cross shat brace. Jerry didn't think they were necessary. Don't know where that came from!

Do it Larry! If there are any ill effects (which I doubt), put it back. No big deal! And if it's loose, just what good is it? Very little cab drop in Performance Guitars.

The fix for that dopey Carter reverser was heavy wheel bearing grease.. Lasted a year or so, wipe it off, put on a little new grease with a fingertip, and that setup was dependable, but still a really poor design.. bob

Larry, If I understand your question you are talking about the cross rod that has no pull rods connected to it. I would say it could be removed. Maybe in the beginning they had another lever change planned and did not do it and just left the cross rod in. But I see nothing wrong with just leaving it. J.R. Rose

That's what I thought too. The most used (that I have seen) term for the rod that the bellcranks attach to, is "cross shaft". I have never seen that brace called a cross shaft.

I think this is the shaft they are referring to. It's empty but it doesn't look like it would affect anything.
I don't know if it comes out, but I wouldn't worry about removing it, 'cause I'm bad at losing things,  but it may rattle if it's real loose or otherwise just be in the way. |

That brace is to stop detuning just like in many other guitars. Wood cabinet bodies will bow out when pedals are applied. This according to Bud Carter when I had a sight problem with a new D-10 Carter detuning when pedals were applied. He added the flat brace across the body and it was fixed. No more detuning. J.R.

I defer to Larry, but I thought the cross shaft I marked is what he was referring to, not the wide strap bolted across the aprons in center of the guitar.
As stated, that one is to stabilize the body from deflecting under pressure etc. |
