I just wanted to put in a good word for our own Ricky D. You know I love that Texas honky tonk steel and Ricky kills it. Along with his outstanding work with Weldon Henson, his playing with Miss Leslie and the Juke Jointers is the real deal. TONS of steel and an encyclopedia of intros, breaks, and fills to build your chops.
Check out Miss Leslie's "Wrong Is What I Do Best" and "Between The Whiskey and The Wine" CD's.
Here's a sample of Ricky's breaks...
"Wrong Is What I Do Best"
nice break at 0:55 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-sLZJli9ls
"I Need Me a Whole Lot More Than I Need You"
and another nice break at 1:20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QYkvKf_YAk
"Talk To Me Lonesome"
break at 1:00
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9bqRrFnS2I
Thanks for the music, Ricky!! |

Ricky is obviously on par with some of the best players ever. Gosh, he makes that old Bud sound like is was meant to! AND, he is probably the top Bud mechanic today. _________________ RICK ABBOTT

Ricky was one of the first steel players I ran into when I moved to the Austin area in '95. Besides being a great player, he's also an all-around good guy and an excellent teacher. I took a couple of lessons where he straightened out some bad habits; right hand position, etc. that were invaluable. Thanks again Ricky! |

I love listening to Ricky play and this music is the type of Country music I want to hear. I stopped turning on the so called Country music stations a long time ago along with the so called CMA awards shows. Too much awful stuff to plow through to hear maybe one Alan Jackson. Texas I am convinced is putting out the best new Country with top notch talent like this. _________________ Carter 12 string 4petals 5knees, Mullen G2 3 petals 4 knees

Wow; thanks Jeff for your super nice words and music presentation of the music me and Leslie did together. But when you hear all the music off those two CD's...well that was "Tommy Detamore" that recorded and produced it, in his studio..and when you have two steel players working/producing together....well there ya go...> and Tommy; I got most everything I know from the great steel players I always listened to.....and YOU are one of my long time mentors....Bless you.
Bill; we go a long ways back...I'll never forget our first times together; sharing/learning this steel guitar stuff...awesome.
Thanks all ya'll for the supportive words... and did anyone catch that song Jeff posted: "I need me a whole lot more than I need you"?? Me and Tommy thought it would be cool to record me playing two parts played together; like Hughey and Garrish used to do....Like I did here on this title track of the first recording at Tommy Detamore's...this is me playing the same intro recorded twice..; two steels playing the same thing...>

Hey Ricky, you remember that Johnny Paycheck record you gifted me at out first lesson? The Real Mr. Heartache? LOL.. I think your words were "Go learn to play that, and you'll be a steel player.".. good advice then and now. I've still got that CD BTW, and it's in the regular rotation. |

Yes indeed Bill; I certainly remember giving it to you with that quote...because I learned as much of the Lloyd Green stuff as I could off it...to become the steel player I am. Matter of fact...here is me playing a Dale Watson song that I totally swiped a Lloyd Green intro and style from...and it's a video nobody in America has seen..as it was in Australia we recorded on a TV show..ha...but you can see/hear me play with some of that enthusiasm that I gave you that CD>
(it's in my facebook)

and another song from that show...some of the fastest lloyd Green snappy pickin style I could muster up>

All of these cuts are just killer Ricky! Ya know, if country & western music wasn't in the shambles it's in, I bet Dale would be one of the music business's current Waylons or Johnnys. It's a shame but it seems like things are still alive and proper in TX. |

Thanks Bobby; and you know I dropped out of Dale Watson's band in 2002. But yes; shambles it is....but we still get by on great music here in Texas....all the time; we don't need top 40 at all.

Yeah, I knew you weren't with him in a while Ricky - but loved the stuff you did with him. And, God bless Texas - I should have moved there in 1980 like I'd planned to. The music scene has always been real and vibrant. |

I enjoy your playing a great deal Ricky, although I have only heard twenty or so songs with you (and that is strictly my own fault and something I must remedy!). I don't know how much is natural talent and how much is sheer discipline and effort of learning but it sure all pays off. I would just as soon hear you play as Lloyd, Buddy, Weldon, Dickey or any of the other "masters". That's as nice a compliment as I know how to give, and I put Tommy Detamore right in that same category. Keep it up, and thank you! _________________ Doug Earnest

I agree with Doug on all counts. I can be very guilty of not listening to current players - kinda stuck in the time before 1977. Everything of yours I have listened to is top notch - in fact I shared one of your tunes with a friend today. And I also always enjoy your posting as well. |

WOW! Well said Doug...wish I could have thought of that compliment, because it’s completely accurate!

OH thanks so much Doug and again Bobby; ya'll are so supportive no matter how many songs you hear. And thanks Eddie...you are too cool....and ok here's one that me and Dale swing and play twin parts and I play the C6 pedal steel and stand up and play a stringmaster tuned to D13...yeehaa.

Information for those who wonder what Dale is talking about in that excellent video Ricky just posted. Lloyd Cross was a hatmaker here in Austin who designed a unique crease for his custom hat customers. I think Dale had one at the time. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
