I'm a neophyte, albeit an enthusiastic one, to steel guitar. Perhaps this comes across a bit morbid, but I've been listening to a lot of Andy Iona's recordings lately...I see that he passed in Nov 1966 in southern California and I wondered if anyone knew of his grave site? Haven't found anything online. Definitely an early, influential pillar of Hawaiian steel guitar. "Sand" and "How D'ya Do" are great compositions that possessed me early on, thanks to Jules Ah See, and recently I came across this song:

Usually (as in the case of the above mentioned songs) I prefer the later versions (courtesy Jules and JB), but Iona's plaintive version here is simple, lovely, and evocative in a way that even the master Jerry Byrd seems to look up to. Anyway, there's not a lot about him that I've found online, so if anyone has anything to share, I'm all ears! |
