Of course, when I say 'Honky Tonk', I'm referring to the great Bill Doggett's hits Honky Tonk, Pts. 1&2. Though my arrangement and performance is clearly more Texas-sounding than Philadelphia, Billy Butler and Mr. Doggett were on my mind.
This demo is far from a finished arrangement, but I think the world is ready for another Steel Guitar Rag, don't you?

I appreciate all the kind comments from everyone, thank you!
I’ve made the track private now because I have plans for it. I’ve spent the last two days writing an ending for the tune that I have to admit is pretty cool, so I have definitely invested some energy into it. I don’t want a casual demo to be the thing that lingers in people’s minds.

The idea starts in my mental jukebox. In my mind, all music melts together. Music without borders. I have also been very inspired by people like Ry Cooder, Van Dyke Parks, Randy Newman, Miles Davis/Gil Evans, Clare Fischer, etc., who are geniuses at arranging. The arranging and presentation is the most important thing to me.
So, it starts from the bottom up. If I can find or create a drum loop that gets close to the feel I'm looking for, then I create a bass line. On top of that, maybe a rhythm guitar.
Most of the bass lines on Steelonious were written by me, and my bassist was very thankful that I saved him the difficult work of creating bass parts, especially when he is a busy cat.
But I also have alternate arrangements for tunes, and use these to suit personnel changes on the bandstand or my mood.

What I mean. But I can see why you don't want listeners to get the demo fixed in mind.
I saw Clare Fischer, directing the One O'Clock lab band at North Texas (with Lyle Mays) doing one of his tunes and some others.
Arrangers are god. You can do a lot with a demo that has the key parts sketched in. Like I'm tellin' you. |
