I built my first lap steel last November. Since then I have been building and trying to learn to play. I was anxious to have someone who knew how to play, try it and make a recording. After about 9 months a friend of a friend told me he would like to try a lap steel. He previously played guitar in the Air Force band, but never touched a lap steel. I agreed to loan him my red and white faux New Yorker. He had it for 3 weeks which was longer than I cared to give up my Ernie Ball tone bar, so I sent along a 7/8" deep socket in the gig bag. I'm pretty sure he made his own backing track with his guitar then played the lap steel along with it? I think maybe I should switch to a 7/8" deep socket. This sure sounded sweet to my ears. I was hoping I could build a decent lap steel.....Mission Accomplished........I think!

Thanks for listening............

It's just not fair!
Three weeks?
Makes me want to burn my lap steels and stick to a comb and waxed paper. |

Yeah, and that was without a tone bar! I know, disgusting, but so glad I finally got to hear how one of my builds sounded. BTW.......... before you burn your lap steels, it was a "Craftsman" 1/2" drive socket if that helps any? _________________ Currently own, 6 Groner-tone lap steels, one 1953 Alamo Lap steel, Roland Cube, Fender Champion 40 |

When I first got my lap steel (and had it tuned EADGBE, I didn't know better) I first used one of those glass medicine bottles I had bought for regular guitar, and then after buying a couple deep sockets for working on Cornelius soda kegs, I took the one that didn't fit and it was actually a pretty good tone bar for a while! |
