Sounds like the same guy who played on Warren Smith's and Judy Lynn's records as well. Love his tone and the tail end slide on the break.

Johnny Davis it could be, he played with Gene for years.
The record was produced by Tommy Allsup, who produced Little Joe Carson for Liberty, and who used Billy Mize on steel. So it could be Mize. It sounds like early-mid 60s to me.
I used to see Gene live all the time when I lived in LA. He was a singin' sonofagun, no lie.
Most of Warren Smith's early 60s country stuff was produced by Joe Allison, and had Mooney on steel. Allsup produced 4 tunes on Smith, but without notation I could find on who played what and when. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Al Petty played on Warren Smith's Blue Smoke record. Or at least he told me he did. |
