I am not one to stand up and play--never have been. I like to sit and I keep my guitar on a stand, or if I'm playing my console, on legs.
I have an old Pack-a-seat, don't remember the brand, but it's a good one. However, I don't use it anymore--partially because I feel like I'm carrying a shinebox, but mostly because now I like to find a seat height between standing and sitting. I think it looks cooler to the audience, especially being up front of the bandstand, and also it's more comfy.
About 15 years ago, I bought this Qwik-Seat, which is essentially a folding stool made from high grade aircraft aluminum with a very generous and comfortable seat. I've begun using it lately and it is now one of my favorite things I own. They are no longer made (I believe the original company was called Shannon--really a one-man operation).
The height is adjustable, too, but it takes time to do it. It's pretty primitive in that regard. But the ease of use and the comfort are fantastic. And you can't get one. Neener neener.
I really wish someone would make something like this again. I paid about $160 for it back then. It was marketed as a 'musician's stool'. Check it out:

One of my first thoughts at seeing the Westfield Steelonious video was that you were sitting up and more visible to the crowd,
and you also looked comfortable.
As far as adjustability, one might try to find an old clawfoot piano stool with the swiveling seat.
Portability is not as high as with yours, however. Cool stool. |

I find that seat height matters a lot, especially if the steel is on my lap (not on its own legs). If it's at the wrong height, after a couple of hours of balancing the steel while keeping one foot on the volume pedal, my back starts to hurt.
My solution was to get a drum throne. For about $125, I got height adjustment, no arm rests in the way, a folding base, and the ability to swivel (which helps when I switch between several instruments). |

I have a drum throne, too--very convenient for gigging and the swiveling is a big +. I just feel it sits a little too low for me. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

I'm another one in the stool camp.
I use a stool and have the guitar on a table that folds up.
Console legs stay at home.
Comfortable, lightweight and easy to move around and store.
However, for some reason it doesn't make me play like Mike.
I must need a better stool...... _________________ I have stuff.

Sometimes it doesn't.
But I keep on trying. |
