I need to replace a 2" piece of binding. What is the size and type of replacement binding?
Where can I buy?
Any help would be appreciated.

On my 54 the original is Gibson style white-black-white celluloid (I'm guessing) binding on the top. Rough measurement looks 2-3mm thick and 9mm tall. Has shrunk slightly with age, and the finish and lacquer have turned a golden caramel brown.
On cursory search I see similar but not exact binding available in a couple places:

They only seem to come about 1/4" high, and what you need is more like 3/8" I'm guessing. You may have to get some ABS or celluloid (if you can) sheets or strips in black and white and composite the WBW yourself. The outer white is thicker than the inner black and white layers.
Now if your missing binding is on the bottom then just plain white binding in the right height and thickness will do, as the WBW pattern would not be visible.
I'm no luthier so take with a grain of salt. |

In 1954 it is WBW, which is a pretty standard post-war Gibson binding, and probably even prewar.
I don't have a '51 to compare but I've seen pictures of the earlier oval pickup models that clearly have WBW. I wouldn't expect it to have changed between 1948 and mid-1956. In Gibson literature this is sometimes referred to as multi-bound, and that is in fact how it is listed for 1948 in Duchossoir (p89).
I think the only changes in the 1948-1956 "Don Helms" models were the pickup change in 1951, a change from a more red sunburst to the postwar standard "Cremona brown" sunburst finish, and the change to 4 legs configuration. I guess you could also throw in the 3-neck offering starting 1951. |

| It is the W/B/W binding. It has shrunk a bit but this price was off altogether. It is the bottom binding under the jack input. Other than that all other binding is solid. It has the square P90's and 4 legs. |

| If its on the bottom then I wouldn't worry about WBW. Just find a white piece in the right size and thickness or that you can cut down and glue on. Then you will need new lacquer, maybe with an aging compound to help match the color and finish. I know this can be done but its beyond my current expertise. I'm sure there are some spray-on products. |
