Help with reading scale charts

Hey All
I'm trying to wrap my head around reading the Dorian scale chart. I'm trying to understand the number system and how to figure out how to incorporate the pedals into the chart...i would like to learn how to run scales up and down the neck and connect all the dots so to speak...more rock stuff...any help would be great
