Half-Stop assembly retrofit for Bud. Help!

Post by Mark McCornack »

Hi All,
I just got a 1/2 stop assembly from PSGparts and, unfortunately, no documentation came with it. I have never seen one of these in place, and have NO CLUE as to the proper intalation, operation, and adjustment. Michael at PGSparts suggested I reach out to the forum for information. My guitar is a '73 pro-I.
Can ANYBODY post a picture to this thread of one of these installed on a Bud? Any informaion whatsoever I can collect would be better than none. I sure would appriciate the help.
Regards, Mark

post a photo of your pull system,is it a rack/barrel or two hole puller system ? 73 Pro I does not define the pull system , both are fairly easy to install and set-up.

I'll see if I can get a picture and get it posted here. Basically though, it is a standard 2-hole pull of the era. I'm trying to set it up to drop the 2nd string a half, then a full tone. Cheers..Mark

You can see on the RKR crossbar, it is a extra puller with rod running through the brass roller and a barrel behind it and a tension spring and a bracket. So if you have never removed a crossbar and/or put this type mech in; I would highly suggest someone to help that has. I can do it in 10 minutes; but I live in Buda, Tx..ha.

From a Pro III, striking the brass barrel is the first stop, the spring tension follows for the full stop.

Thanks guys! Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words :D
I think I can get to where I'm going from what you have shown me.
So it sounds like I tune this by adjusting my full stop at the hex socket at the end of the pull rod and the half stop is set by noodling around with the barrel on the 1/2 stop underneath until it engages the spring. Sound like I got it right?

Cheers,
Mark

if you are also lowering your 9th string with that knee lever you'll need to do some more balancing as the feel will get a bit fuzzy between when your lower on the 9th takes effect and your barrel kicks in. if you can get the barrel to take effect just as the 9th starts to lower, you'll have yourself a really positive half stop. getting all the lowers and the half step in tune while that happens can be a bit of head scratcher.

Excellent point Dave! I noticed this issue, and for now, I've jus abandoned lowering the 9th string. It seems as though if the amount of rotation of the cross haft required to go from. -1/2 step to -1 step on the 2nd is LESS than thst required to lower the 9th string, then there is no practical solution. I can't really change the radius of the pull ( sho~bud ) and going to a differnt gauge string would probably work, but sound imballanced. I'll keep trying to finesse it, but it seems insoluble. Mark

The 2nd full tone lower and 9th lower are at the same stop, do those first. If the 9th can't make it , check the K Lever travel adjust, it may be off just a tad. The 2nd full tone can be adjusted with the barrel position on the rod. Do the half stop last as thats the easy one. I recall this is how I set up my Pro III's, same half stop system.

Stop, look and think about whats going on with each string with only one knee lever.

Yep a bit awkward as it's all underneath, but once it's set it will stay that way for years, maybe decades .
