i purchased this guitar from Scotty's over 20 years ago.
wanted to explore C6 tuning.
finish was severely cracked and peeling so i refinished guitar now looks very nice and for reasons i dont remember i decided to replace tuners with Grovers.
at that point the project was set aside.
now moving forward noticed this problem (see picture)
insufficiant spacing between tuner keys for E9 string 11
and C6 string 1
tore house up trying to find old tuner keys.long gone.
any suggestions would be appreciated.

i was using as a 10 string but would like to add 11 for a base tone,my s-11 is set up the same way.
i did try temporarily reversing the two head stock and it is better.
i could shave the headstock for the two tuners in question for further separation but would it take at least 1/8 off of
each step,might be kinda funky looking and would i be opening up another can of worms.
im leaning towards changing the two grover keys if someone can recommend a good tuner with a thinner body.

Did you mix up the aluminum headstocks when you put it back together? Can you swap them around and see if that helps?

i may have the first time,after swapping them the spacing was increased but the handle of the C6 string 1 still hits the body of the E9 string 11 tuner and cannot be turned.The problem is that the body and handle ( if that is the correct wording) of the Grover tuner is larger than the original tuners.
its a problem only at these two locations.

Gotoh makes modern Kluson style tuners. I put then on a ZB that had bad tuners. They fit very well and are much smoother, and look right.

GOT It,ya hoo
thanks Eric looks like I wont need them but thanks for replying.
I think it was Jon who suggested reversing the tuner.
I misread and thought he was referring to the two tuner assemblies.
I changed the tuner on C6 string 1.
the button is offset on opposite side of the main shaft depending on which side of the headstock they are placed.
by using tuner from opposite side (string 11) it moved the button closer to the nut.
it was still barely touching so I shaved about 1/32
off the two steps and am now good to go.
JUST WANTED TO THANK ALL WHO REPLYED

I apologize for my impatient edit, above. Bad mood. My problem.
My original post was poorly written but I thought the idea had some merit. Glad you tried it. From what I'm seeing, it would buy you a fraction of an inch and I was a bit skeptical that it would be enough. I doubt you can get a peg winder on it.

I've never had a ZB or dealt with this issue, but rather than replace the entire tuners perhaps you could just replace the tuner buttons at much less cost?
I bought Keystone style Gold tuner buttons for my new Mullen because I wanted the Gold color. You can buy them at Allparts in Gold or Silver.
Just be sure to get the ones that are for Grovers and not another brand.
See these links;

Silver are $20.00 for 6 buttons;

Gold are $25.00 for 6 buttons.

Hope this may be a help?
Andy
