Maybe you'll be surprised to hear that LA offers actually not that many choices for these kind of instruments.

You might want to check out "McCabe's" in Santa Monica.
Maybe "The Fretted Frog" in Pasadena.

If you have the time: go to Oceanside to see Jim Palenscar's "Steel Guitars of North County". Lots of pedal steel but also electric non-pedal.

Well, you will be in CA.. So If you're willing to do a little driving. NRP is up in SLO, (San Luis Obispo), which is roughly 200 miles north. Once you get to Oxnard on the 101, you are along the coast for a beautiful drive. I would call Shannon directly at NRP and she can tell you where they have reso's in stores.
Approx 100 miles south of LA is Oceanside, where Jim Palenscar's steel guitar shop is located. He has the biggest selection of steels I've seen anywhere. But I would call first to make sure they'll be there that day.
