I can't locate the thread that dealt with this issue. Does anybody know how I can find it or answer this question: I have always used a plain 6th string on E9th but it seems like the separation is not as good as I would like. For example, on strings 3 and 5, I can hear each individual string quite clearly. On 5 and 6 however, the two sounds seem to run together. Is it just the frequency's involved or my ears maybe? Would going to a wound 6th help on string separation any? What is the general thinking on wound vs. plain on the 6th string?

I don't know if you drop the 6th a whole tone or not, but if you do, you're going to have a hard time of it with a wound string.

George, I use SIT strings but I use a GHS Boomer W22 and I lower it a whole tone. It takes less travel than other wound strings that I've tried. I enjoyed the meeting last Sunday and I hope I can make the next one.

I've had good luck using a wound 18 for my 6th.
