i started out on a carter starter. it was fine for a while. i wanted to go to a pro model. i bought a carter U12 7 floor and 5 knee. too much psg and too many strings for me as a newbe. i sold my carter U12 and was thinking of getting a new carter s10 3 & 5. i was also looking at a desert rose psg. my question is which one is the better or are they about the same. i heard that the new carters are hard to beat. to sound and sustain is a lot better. i don't know thats why i am asking on here. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks doc

I'm a big Gene Fields GFI fan -- BUT, that's all I've ever played, so I have nothing to compare GFI to.

Sidney, I haven't played a Desert Rose, but I feel you would be greatly satisfied with a GFI or Carter.

Go for the one you like.
Most new guitars are all good.
Often, folks select one which is made locally-- look at all the Mullens in Colorado!
The most important thing is the ability to have service by the folks who built it.
The next thing is you liking it and being satisfied.
Could happen for any number of reasons-- the finish, the shape of the pedals, the decoration on the fingerboard, the workmanship of the underside-- any reason at all.
Which one? The one you like.
Be happy. Don't worry!

Check the Carter web site, they have several guitars ready to sell now. Brand new D-10 for about $300 more than the Sho-Bud. Also some SD-10 under $2000.

Sid, the difference between the Day&Emmons setup is: pedals 1 and 3 are interchanged. You can change your steel to either setup by the linkage underneath.
If you want a new guitar built locally, consider the Zumsteel. If I wanted a new guitar I would contact Bud Carter because He is an old friend of mine who grew up here in Missouri and I know he can build a quality product. This is strictly personal and I know that there are other good maufacturers out there.
I have never bought a new steel guitar and would certainly shop around for a bargain in a used one first. If you are not able to do your own maintainance on a steel guitar, you may not want a used one.
My personal preference is an all-pull system because I think they are easier to tune and maintain than the push-pull.
Rather than buying a SD10, I strongly recommend getting a double 10. I have no doubts that you will eventually want to play the C6 tuning as well as E9......JD

I agree with John...Guitars to day are built to last so buying a D-10 to prepare for the future would not be a bad idea.
Nothing personal but I like the pedal action of a Zum compared to a carter. Keep in mind I am a big boy and play very aggressive. Of course my first choice is a JCH but if you buying new you talkin bucks and a long wait.

Go for a Desert Rose. I have heard really great things about the starter steel. Also I know Chuck Back for 20+ years and you will not go wrong.......

well i went to harrisonville today and got my zum from bruce. it was a used one but looks great and sounds even better. i really dislike black but that was all he had and it looks sharp the way he fixed it up. i tried it out when i got home and it sounds so sweet if it was a gal i would fall in love. ha ha ha sho bud was good in its day but they tell me they have to have a lot of repair done to them. i was wondering when you by a sho bud why did you always get extra parts for but now i know why. ha ha ha. thanks for all the input guys but i would say from here on i will be a zum man.
