I was wondering if my 74 SHO-BUD is a push/pull or all pull. the reason I ask is two fold. 1) I am new to pedal steel and know diddly squat and 2) I have been reading the histoy of pedal steel and that brought me to wonder about my steel.
I dont have the numbers from the inspection tag with me. it's signed but impossible to make out the sig. would that info help with further identifying this steel?

Your Sho~Bud is an all pull. Most push/pulls are Emmons but Marlin is credited with some type of push/pull mechanism and Promat makes new push/pulls.

It would be an "all-pull". As far as I know, Sho~Bud never incorporated "push-pull" mechanics into any of their guitars... I've read that is part of the reason that Buddy left Sho~Bud to develop the Emmons guitar.

I'm sure Ricky Davis or others will chime in and further enlighten you. {See what I mean? Mike posted while I was in the process of hitting the submit button - You have to be quick to reply first }

thanks guys. yep. it's real quick around here.
pedal steel is a facinating instrument. I like looking at the mechanisms. it's a wonder; perhaps because I am not an engineering type. how Shot and Buddy came up with the idea just astounds me.
in a sense it appears so contraption like, but the utility /logic produces such wonderful notes. am I getting hooked or what?

I f you want to be truly amazed have a look under a ZB and see if you can figure how anything like that could make music.

Brenden, I agree. the first time that I saw the underside of a ZB I couledn't believe that it would work, but after playing many other brands of guitars I am now firmly in the ZB camp. Mine plays as smoothly as most modern day guitars. Like an Emmons push/pull, after they are set up and adjusted properly they are smooth and very reliable. I equate owning and playing ZB's to owning and driving vintage Jaguars. When they are maintained and set up properly there's nothing better.
