"It's the Water". Can't find anything on this tune for credits etc. Can't remember hearing it before. Is this a McCall penned tune? I'm not all that familiar with him, but I do have a couple of cassette tapes of his.
I'm sure I was there for the performance though. Just don't recall the number.
Buddy tearing it up as usual and never sounded better.
What a treat to review. Thanks again Bill Ferguson for preserving and letting us revisit these magical times.
Also to Buddy and Darrell and Scotty for allowing them to be passed on.

On the album " Darrell McCall and The Tennessee Volunteers Reunion" he is credited as the writer...I remember first hearing it down here somewhere around 1975-1978.....

On his live shows when introducing this song, Darrell tells a story about how Ray and the Cherokee Cowboys had a night off on the road in Sweetwater, TX. So as the story goes, Darrell and Buddy call a cab to take them to a liquor store so they can buy some beer. Much to their chagrin, the cab driver informs them that Sweetwater was "dry". So they went back to the hotel room and Darrell, feeling inspired, wrote the song.

I am so thankful that I was able to video these performances and that Buddy and Darrell allowed me post this for the sake of history.
If you watch, David Smith (bass) had never played this song and watching Darrell's left hand on the guitar to get the chords and he nailed it.

Yes, great supporting group. What a great bunch of musicians there.
Thanks for the story Tommy. I bet there are many other stories of those 2 guys. I don't know if it was that year or another one at St. Louis, when Darrell recounted a few things. I kept thinking all the talking was cutting into Buddy's playing time.  He did like to talk. |
