The tuning I'm using is, high to low, G-E-C-A-G-E-C-A. This seems to work fine.

you might also try tuning that top string down to D

Works but it can get a bit thin sounding with that skinny G at the top. I think that's why most C6 players like it with the E. Another reason to have the E on the top is that you can easily re-tune on the fly to A6, which then gives you your 5th (E) on the top string.

No sooner do you post your favourite tuning than people suggest changes. I like your tuning and use it too, without it sounding a bit thin. The voice is terrible though I have to admit.

to be fair, changing one string on the top of the tuning is a pretty minor change.

James Kerr has some hauntingly beautiful renditions on youtube in ECACEG (LO to Hi). He is a masterful player, and builds most of the lap steels in the videos. Check out all his videos. His rendition of "The Tennessee Waltz" in this tuning is the most beautiful I have ever heard. Harry
