I'd like to intro myself a little so you know who you're chattin' with later on.
I've been building & playing 5 string fretted electric violins (made the one and only fiber optic lighted fretboard I know of in the US) for awhile now, did an all acoustic one too (what a challenge that was) and I make laser engraved fretboards as well for cigar box guitars, violins, and lap steels usually from ebony (hate that stuff), maple, birch, walnut, oak (hard to cut clean), mahogany, and poplar. I've built cigar box guitars, violins, cellos, and a single lap steel for myself with a birch and abalone inlay fretboard because I didn't feel I could justify the cost of a production one since I already made all kinds of instruments anyway! Right?
So I've been thinking for a few years what a treat it would be to just go completely crazy and try to find a pedal steel. well, I saw a few, bid on some thru e-bay (not real happy about doing that though) and of course didn't win the auction. I was looking at a Sho-Bud Crossover last week for $1500 but on accident saw a beautiful one on CraigsList that really made me stop and look harder. Turns out a fellow member here (Steve Benzian from the SF Bay Area here in Calif) had a Lamar D10 for sale. Seems Steve had it listed for a few weeks and I just never saw it. Imagine that.

Well, we conversed a little, I went down and took a look and bought it without even trying to hassle him on the price. It's beautiful and for a first (and probably only one) pedal steel I feel quite satisfied. It needs a little TLC as Steve seems to have several steels and this one probably didn't get brought out too much because it's heavy and Steve is getting up in years. (Aren't we all!) Steve says, "Oh I don't think I've even changed the strings in 10 yrs", OMG... LOL,,,, I guess it might need some new ones pretty soon then huh... lol
A little tweak here and there on the tuners and she sounds really nice. Of course I'm new to it and coming over from a lap steel was easy on the C6 neck but that E9 seems to be weird... how do you guys switch back and forth so easy. LoL

This is a 2003 Lamar D10 with 8+5 originally sold to a fella in New York, then about Nov 2006 to Steve and he's had it the whole time since then. I suspect I'll have it just about as long as I can so here's some pics for your viewing pleasure... thanks again fellow members...

That's a great guitar. Congratulations on dodging the overpriced Crossover.

That guitar been there on Craigslist forever, several weeks. It was still listed this morning for $1550, that's a super deal on a really nice guitar. Comparing it to a crossover is like comparing a low mileage Mercedes to a 70s Nova with 350k miles and three hubcaps missing. I never saw it posted here on the forum, he should have been able to get a lot more for it, you did well. I would have gone for it myself if I didn't already have way too many guitars. Enjoy the journey my friend!

Yes, I think Steve felt sorry for me... lol
It is a wonderful instrument and I cannot agree more, it is like comparing a high dollar ride to a junk yard tow in.
I have no professional experience on the other versions like the Maverick, the pro II, the Crossover, etc so I'm at a loss to do the decision making myself but relying on others I felt knew a lot more than I did, I went with this one.
Steve is such a great guy, I can only hope to play half as well as he can...
Thank you for the confidence builder.

I was going to buy that guitar from Steve, but really didn't want the C6 neck. Ended up buying his Mullen G2 SD10 instead. Different price point though:)

You got and incredible deal on a beautifully built guitar, from one hell of a nice guy. Enjoy!
