The weak point on a Snark clip on tuner is in the area where the ball on the stem goes into the tuner base. If you turn the tuner and bend it, that area may crack. In the past, I have super glued the cracked area and ball on the stem but you can't manipulate the tuner head any longer.
There are videos on Youtube with different ways to repair this but I use a small zip-tie around the weak area and it provides support and I have not had another problem.
Also, I came across this zip-tie fastener at Harbor Freight for a $1.99 and use it to tighten any zip-tie. Pretty cool!

I've given up on the Snarks. I have a bunch kicking around the house. They work great when the battery is absolutely fresh; then they're a bit useless- won't pick up the vibrations.
I switched to the TC Electronics Polytune. It is pricey but it works well on everything- mandolin, dobro, guitar, and PSG. |

I've used a "Ty Wrap" (zip tie) gun for many years, in commercial work. Good ones are $40 or $50. The inexpensive's work but OK for light duty.
I had a couple of the Snark's - bought them on a black Friday sale last year. Gave most of them away at Christmas. Along with being fragile the battery doesn't seem to last very long. I picked up a Fender for the same sale price as the Snark's and it is built different and won't break as easy. It doesn't seem to eat batteries as fast (my wife uses one on her acoustic guitar). |

I shut the snark off as soon as I tune up. The latest models have have hi visibility readout. I buy the #2032 batteries online and get 25 for $10.00. I like the snark for a fast in the ball tuning on the pedal steel, all my lap steels and Six string guitars. The Snark tuners I get cost $12.00.
The only other tuner I like for an exact tuning for my pedal steel is the Boss TU-12 that I have used forever. I have a bunch of other tuners but they stay in a drawer. Old dog vs new trick.😎 |

I like the Snarks and the Korgs. I need to see a needle align on a dial--it's the best way to tune the thirds. I have a Peterson Strobo Plus but haven't figured out how it works. It's kind of large too. The Snarks fit right on the back apron of the guitar and I have velcro to fasten my Korg CA-30 to the pad. If the Korg had an illuminated dial like the Snark, it would be perfect. I'm hoping some builder will just build a tuner into the the guitar. How hard could it be?
My gripe about Snarks is the rubber feet seem to come off after a couple of days. I stuck on a little piece of black duct tape, works for me. |
