I absolutely love the sound and feel of Blue Wind by Buddy Emmons which is on the well known Amazing Steel Guitar: The Buddy Emmons Collection. I would love to find songs/albums that are similar to this either by The Big E or anyone else from that era.

Andy Volk posted a transcription on here in 2009 and mentioned it could be an Emmons/Jimmy Day thing.

Thanks!

great tune. Jimmy Day wrote it but I've never heard his version.

as for similar recordings, I'd say Jerry Byrd and perhaps Santo & Johnny. in fact Blue Wind kind of strikes me as a cross between those two.

there's a song called Diamond Head by the Beach Boys that was written and played by Al Vescovo that has a similar Hawaiian/exotica feel:

Well, I have a lot of Jerry Byrd stuff, as well as Diamond Head (funny that you mentioned that obscure Beach Boys track). I don't really have any early Jerry Byrd stuff (kind of hard to find). Santo and Johnny - great call! Their first two albums are available on one CD.

The official transcription in notation and tab appears in my B11th book, along with Jerry Byrd's "Steelin' the Chimes".

Rattling the spring reverb to get surf sounds on Diamond Head, such a nostalgic sound. One of my pet sounds from the BB's.

The steel work is just another example of songs that worked their way into consciousness and made me want to play steel.

Thanks for mentioning your book Andy.

Any other artists/songs/albums that have things that are jazzy like Blue Wind?

That link you posted for the Mauna Loa Islanders was pretty cool and in stereo. The only version I can find online so far is in mono. - thanks.

Do you have these tracks in stereo from them as well?
- Moon of Waikiki
- Hawaiian Wedding Song
- Moon of Manakoora
- Sweet Leilani

The Beach Boys recorded two shows in Hawaii in August 1967 for an album to be called Lei'd in Hawaii, but the performances were pretty poor so they shows have never come out save for a few tracks. Diamond Head was not played - it was recorded a year later.

I don't have the album, just that track, Richard.

While JB is not known for jazzy material, here's cool Byrd solo (actually from about 1952 or '53, not 1960.:

Search "jerry byrd on the shores of Waikiki" on Youtube for other cuts from that LP.

Thanks again. I did stumble on Joel Katz, and there's never been anyone quite like Jerry Byrd.

It's frustrating that we can't get the Buddy Emnmons album where Blue Wind is from. Or can we?

I would like to hear Blue Wind by Buddy if someone could post it. I don't recall ever hearing it, at least didn't know the title if I heard it.

Blue Wind can be found on Buddy's Amazing Steel Guitar collection, which was a reissue of the Steel Guitar Jazz album along with some of his earliest recordings:

https://www.amazon.com/Amazing-Steel-Guitar-Emmons-Collection/dp/B000002ZB9

interestingly, I see Blue Wind is also featured on this Texas Troubadours compilation... I'm assuming it's the same version on the above release. it also features Greensleeves and Highland Swing which undoubtedly come from the Black Album:

I finally tracked down my booklet for the Amazing Steel Guitar Collection. The final 11 tracks are the 1963 Steel Guitar Jazz album. The first 3 are early sides as the Country Boys from 1956. Then you have the Four Wheel Drive b/w Blue Wind single from 1959.

Here's what Billboard had to say about the original when it was released in early 1955.

I think Jimmy re-issued these songs on a cassette tape he put out that received limited distribution, maybe around 1990?

I've scoured the web but never found it. Would also love to hear the Jimmy Day version!

I've got the vinyl disc, but don't have the capability to play it right now. Haven't heard it in 20 years plus.

I'm virtually positive it was on a Day cassette. Wasn't it the one called "For Jimmy Day Fans Only" or something like that? Compiled by Jimmy himself.

The other day I broke down and installed Spotify in hopes it might have oddball stuff like this.

I was immediately disappointed. They claim to have 30 million tunes.

But they don't have Day's "Blue Wind" or plenty of others I searched for---even though I know for a fact that much of what I searched for has been reissued on CD.

They apparently don't have a lot of stuff that was reissued on vinyl but not CD; or originally issued on cassette only; or reissued on CD, but not by a major well-known label. Etc, etc. That adds up quickly. I didn't even look to see if they have any of the hundreds of steel guitar CDs that have been released in the last 30 years.

I've heard that there is some way for Spotify users to upload and share their individual stashes, but I don't know if that's true or how to do it.

I still have the 45 record with Blue Wind, which has Four Wheel Drive on the other side.

Something similar to Blue Wind that comes to my mind would be My Bluest Day, recorded by Pete Drake, and written by Hal Rugg. It was included on the Forever album(1964) with all those talking steel guitar songs. It was a "must learn" song for me, and one of my all time favorites. In fact, I bought the album only for My Bluest Day, although it was a kick to hear Pete's talking steel guitar gimmickry!

received this CD today and I was right about Blue Wind but wrong about Greensleeves and Highland Swing (AND Danny Boy!)

these two come from the same session as 4-Wheel Drive and Blue Wind, recorded October 8, 1959 with Harold Bradley on guitar, Jimmy Day on bass, and Douglas Kirkham on drums:

Greensleeves 1959
Highland Swing 1959

while Danny Boy comes from a Texas Troubadours session recorded May 28, 1961 with Grady Martin and Pig Robbins also participating:

Danny Boy 1961

I'm pretty blown away to be hearing these for the first time! these will hold me over until I can track down Jimmy's version of Blue Wind Winking
