George Jones' String Band - Opry Rag

Here Is A Little Rarity From The Starday Records Vaults. This Instrumental, Recorded By The First Band To Be Claimed As George Jones', Was Released On A Red Vinyl 45 RPM Extended Play Record (45-366, Starday; 1957), Meant For Use By Disc Jockeys. It Was Later Used On An Album Released By Mercury Records, Around 1959, During Their Short Merger With Starday. Enjoy!

I have no real idea who's on steel guitar but the tone and riffs sound a lot like Al Petty.

Wow, thanks for posting that. I would also go for Herb Remington who actually can be heard on some of the early GJ sides. Almost positive that there are some folks around here who know for sure!

It sounds exactly like Al Petty to me. I have some other stuff by him from that period. Doesn't sound like Herb Remington's tone, but I've been fooled before.

In the late 1960s--& early 1970s Ralph Emmery's (sp?) afternoon WSM TV show opened with this tune & it was known as "Country Rag".
