These have been discussed on the Forum many times. Do a search in the "Bar Chatter" archive, (among others), and I'm sure you will find some threads on the Multi-Kord guitars.

Logan, the Harlin "Multi-Kord" was probably the <u>first</u> pedal steel. They were made from about 1937 or 1938 up until the late '60s. Not a very good guitar, by today's standards, they still sold a few thousand of them to players wanting to delve into the new world of pedal steel.

They were ok if you just wanted to go from one tuning to another. The odd string may have needed a bit of a tune-up. If you can get it cheap, I think you'll like it if it is in decent working condition. Certainly doesn't compare with any of todays pedal guitars.

I actually owned a Multi-Chord. I traded it to Bobby Caldwell around 1958(telling his age,he may make me a death wish). The thing I remember most about it was: bring the cold Multi-Chord into a warm room and you could tune it all night. It was all metal.......JD

Some one recently had a beautiful Multichord for sale on E bay. It was red and the prettiest one I have ever seen. The steel and case both looked new. It may still be there.

I had one,in 1955. It was my 1st pedal steel.
(6 strings,4 pedals) I think I kept them in business,buying "pull" cables.(they used cables,instead of rods.)From there,I went to a Gibson "Electraharp".(8 strings,6 pedals,which wasn't much better. they used rods,but they were about as big as coat hangers.)

I bought one cheap on Ebay and still have it. It was a great introduction to the pedal steel. The nice thing about it is that every string can be raised or lowered with a machine screw, so you can "custom design" or change your copedent quickly and easily. However, you will outgrow it very quickly if you pursue learning steel.
