On a recent trip through Nashville, my daughter and I had just enough time to visit lower Broadway: specifically, the Ryman, ET's Record Shop, and Gruhn Guitars.
In the Gruhn store, I asked as respectfully as I could where I could look at some steels and was told by an embarrassed clerk that no one in the city deals with it anymore--all those in the game have either decamped to the suburbs or have stopped their involvement.
Something has sure as hell happened here, and I can theorize along with everyone else, but someone must know something.

Don't despair James, I visited Gruhns guitar shop in 1982, and they didn't have any steels then either - although I managed to score a nice Session400. The hardly had any electric guitars either, mostly acoustic stuff back then. I guess you should have popped out to Bobbe's store !! |

there are plenty of Steels in Nashville..you just went to the wrong guy, Gruhns is a nice guitar shop..very high end ..no Steels, don't fret(no pun intended) they don't even have all that many Tele's..and don't even try to tell me Tele's aint' popular in Nville anymore !
It's a vintage guitar shop..thats what they sell..thats what they buy..
you should have gone up to see bobbe S..he's got Steels..a room full of them...
I hope you visited some clubs and had a chance to see some fine local players while you were right there on Broadway..

Actually, I was aware of what Gruhn was all about, but I at least thought they would know who was who, and in fairness, the guy was seriously embarrassed in that he couldn't offer any suggestions.
He did mention one guy but couldn't recall the name until I guessed "Bobbe Seymour," which he immediately recognized. He also noted that guys like me come in at least once a month asking the same thing.
As for seeing anyone picking, it was around 10:00 am--not much potential that time of day.
Oh, well, for all that, there is a picture somewhere of my daughter and me picking guitar on the Ryman stage.

The guy at Gruhn is not alone and that's not as bad as when I went to ETs record shop at Opryland and asked the guy there if they had Tommy White's new CD. He asked me who he plays for. Duhhhh

Going to Gruhn's and asking about steel guitars is like going to your local Chevy dealer and asking about parts for a Mustang.
First, realize that pedal steel guitars are less popular than bagpipes. (That's already been proven.) Then, realize that there's only about two-dozen music stores in the entire country that feature them.
In the rest, all you'll get is a blank stare, or just a smirk.
