| Is the added pedal tension with a wound 6th unavoidable? I'm cool with the extra travel, i just think that the extra stiffness of the pedal is going to take a lot of getting used to. |

| I always had trouble with it. I tried it many times on many of the MSA and ShoBud guitars I played over the years and it was always too much of a hassle. Besides the standard 1/2 tone raise,I have always dropped the low G# to F# on pedal 5 on ALL my guitars. I found the wound string to have too much pedal travel on the raise AND too LITTLE on the lower. I always went back to a plain string. I liked the sound,but the aggravation wasn't worth it. The plain string cuts through the mix a bit better in my cheap single note runs too ... It can be set up too function ok with just the raise,but most guys who try it run back to a plain low G# bob |

Funny, I always thought that if you used a lighter string (the core of the wound 6th is smaller than the plain 6th), the tension would be less? If you set it up properly, the throw will be longer, but the tension should be about the same, or maybe even less than with the plain 6th. On my guitars, the full movement of the "B" pedal with the wound string is less than 3/4". The effort required is only slightly more than the "A" pedal, but considerably less than the "C" pedal. I think you just need someone knowledgeable to check your guitar out.
On my old MSA Classic, (and my new Millennium, as well), lowering an .010 guage 3rd string a full tone is not a problem for the changer (though the old guitar required a lighter return spring to make the change). |

Added pedal tension? That doesn't sound right. The tension of the string itself is considerably less. If you use the right holes in the changer and bell crank, I think you'd have less pedal tension, not more.
Am I wrong? |

Not on my Carter. As said above, slightly longer throw (if hookup kept the same) but less tension.

I've tried a wound 6th to no avail. What causes the added tension when you want to drop it a whole tone is the lowering spring in the changer. To get the full tone lower it is stretched to its extreme.

I use a GHS Boomer 22W and the pedal travel is a little less than other wound 22's I've used and I also lower it to F#.
