Recorder as both preamp and recorder?

Recorder as both preamp and recorder?

Did anybody try to use a zoom r8/16/24 as both preamp (from psg via VP to recorder guitar input to preamp input on Nashville 112) and as recorder (of lineout signal). Is this worth trying? I could just try it, but all the cabling seems intimidating and time consuming.

My R24 has very noisy inputs if used without a preamp. I've tried it with a Shure SM-57 and a 4 string electric bass. Tons of hiss. With a moderately priced pre-amp to improve the S/N ratio, the recorded track is extremely quiet. I am using a Studio Projects VTB-1 preamp for all my mic and instrument inputs:
