Fifty-five years ago, four close friends put together their first band. Ottawa, Canada high schoolers Don Norman, Peter Clements , Terry Browne and David Milliken formed The Continentals, and with a ton of hope in their hearts went into Hy Bloom’s Ottawa studio on Sept 22, 1961, convinced the two songs they would record would be snapped up by Quality Records and they would be on their way to fame and fortune. Not! The recording was bad, the musicianship bush-league, and Quality Records promptly snubbed them. The experience, however, would last a lifetime. Over the years they remained in touch and last week, Don, Peter and Dave reunited to record a new tune in Don’s home-based studio in Kingston, Ontario. What an amazing two days! They relived their youth, individual musical careers, and with considerable liquid fortifier, spent hours laying down the tracks to an old Don Gibson song. Alas, Terry could not attend but phoned to wish them well. So here it is, Don on vocals/harmonies, acoustic guitars and brains behind the console, Peter on percussion and Dave on pedal steel and baritone guitars, the new record by Ottawa-based The Continentals – “Sweet Dreams” – immortalized by Patsy Cline and others including the Everly Brothers. Hope you like it.
