Hi Forum,

I just got myself a Fender 1000. I think it was made in those in-between years because the scale is 24.5" but it also has the roller bridge and nut. Sunburst finish but chromed pedals.

When played, there's a slight buzz on certain strings because (it seems) the individual bridge rollers are loose enough to rattle.

Is there an old-time remedy to this? Or is this a characteristic of the old Fender pedal steels that one must live with?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Jeff--actually there is an old-time remedy----generic, not Fender specific. Just put a drop of oil (standard stuff, 3-in-1, whatever you might use to lube the changer) on the roller axle. It can dampen the vibrations. Sometimes works. Some other stuff----if the buzz is the result of insufficient down force of the string on the roller due to a too shallow angle from string to tuner stem you can reverse the wind of the string on the tuner so that the string emerges from the underside of the stem to the nut, gaining a couple of degrees of angle.

Having been the owner of two 1000's during my career, I remember that string buzz was not uncommon, especially with "new" strings. I always thought it was because I tuned down to B6 and there was less tension.

Anyway, the result was that I didn't change strings until I could no longer keep them rust free with one of my wife's emery boards!

Actually, I thought that the strings sounded better as they matured!

Gene had the correct solution. Leo Fender then designed the mute for that resaon which was the second and final design for all 1000 and 2000 and 400 and 800 guitars.

Aloha Jeff... I NEVER use oil of ANY kind on my guitars..
I find that "Dry Powder Graphite" ensures the free movement of components and doesn't attract dust etc..
We may be able to discuss this and other steel related things when Pat and I come to Kaneohe Bay in November..
Pat's bringing her Hofner Jazzica and I'm bringing my Fender 1000)
BTW..There is a pool and barbecue !!!
