Wayne, is it wired series or parallel? (probably Fender twin owners know, I don't)

If it is wired in series then the amp is "seeing" 16 ohms and putting a 4 in there would drop it to 12. Would depend on whether the amp is set to handle it.

If it is wired in parallel, then the amp is "seeing" 4 ohms and I don't think I would drop below 8 ohms on the second speaker.

Just my 2 cents, YMMV.

An 8 ohm and 4 ohm in parallel would be a 2.66 ohm load.

Which should be "close enough," right?

Thanks for the correction Ken, I haven't been seriously into electronics math since my TV repairman days in the 70's and 80's. I was just guessing off the top of my head, thank you for the reminder.

For two loads in parallel, you divide the products by the sums, or Load1*Load2/Load1+Load2
In this case, 4*8=32 and 4+8=12
32/12 is, as Ken said 2.66
Since they say the Fenders can deal with a mismatch between half and double, you'd be OK, as long as the output transformer is in good shape. It'd make me nervous about pushing it, though.

Your 4 ohm speaker will be more driven than the 8 ohm - the fender basically can handle the load even though it is not recommended , but one speaker will be louder than the other , if they are the same model except for the ohms.

The Big answer you want is to have a matched pair of 8 ohm speakers.

To keep consistent , either replace both at the same time or have both re coned at the same time.
