Holy Headroom (No more guitar shopping)

Post by Tim Weaver »

Just had a chance to play a session with my band using a Fender Princeton Reverb. My own amp is a Vox and breaks up pretty easily; I crank the master volume and keep the channel volume really low to try and compensate for a cleaner tone.

I “knew” that I needed more headroom in an amp, but I didn’t understand the difference until I spent a couple of hours without distortion in my sound! The band is all acoustic and we were in a small room so I kept the volume around 3.5.

The conclusion is I need to stop browsing guitars online, and devote time to researching and buying an amp upgrade.

Moved to Electronics from Steel Without Pedals.

Sometimes you forget that your entire signal chain from guitar to cord to pedal(s) to amp is responsible for your overall sound. There's a reason why the Fender tube amps have been the standard for so many years.

that princeton won't sound clean if you have to play with any real volume. you must have been playing very softly. i would suggest at least playing through a designated steel amp before making a final decision.
