Hi folks,

This weekend while watching Gary Brandin tear it up on his beautiful '76 lacquer wood-neck fatback push-pull, I noticed something about the end plates that I'd never noticed before: there is a notch cut out of the bottom edge that's about 4" long and 1/4" deep, centered under the output jack. You can see it in the pic below, which I borrowed from Buddy Emmons.com

What is that for??? Do all push-pulls have it??? My LeGrande certainly doesn't have it.

I believe all push-pulls have them, and I always thought they were handholds for when you have to carry it on/off stage.

You are correct Jim. It was a simplified system of handles such as used on the original Sho-Buds.

One of the things that typified Sho-Buds and Emmons PSG's were they were designed AND built by steel players. So things the average manufacturer never even thought about was implemented on these guitars as standard equipment.

One other example (although it went out of vogue) was the closer together pedals on the early Sho-Buds for A and B (and later C).

A regular manufacturer would not have a clue why this was done. Yet most players of the day knew it the moment they saw it. IE, these pedals came into being for the purpose of rocking on and off with either becoming the pivot point.

I salute these pioneers for what they brought us. May our Lord bring them ever more blessings for the joy they did for us,

carl

Dumb question? What is the top row of holes for?

They're split tuners. Still waiting for the rest of the story, but the beginning is here: http://www.buddyemmons.com/64ish.htm

Do you suspect that the first and twelfth holes on the top row -- the split tuning row -- are there to bolt on the block that the split tuning screws are threaded through?

That would be my guess.
