Magnatone Lap Steel

Post by Jim Stringer »

A friend just acquired a Magnatone 6 string, mother of toilet seat, Serial #26083. Does anyone know how to date Magnatone's from SN -- I've heard it's unreliable. Also, he's wondering if it's best to restore or just leave as is? Thanks.

I've never seen a chart for dating Magnatones from the serial number like they have for Valcos. Pictures would help. Certain features like the fretboard, nut and bridge changed over the years so that might help us give you an approximate date. None of them are crazy valuable, but personally I like to keep them as original as I can.
