Played Steel this morning in church for the first time. I used Zane Kings backing tracks which are great. Only played 2 songs in the middle of the service. The Church has a excellent Organist but after the Pastor found out that I play steel he twisted my arm to play. I was a little nervous, not like playing with a bunch of Honky Tonkers. Maybe next time it will be easier. Billy

The last playing I did at church was for a wedding.
My guitar slinger buddy and myself furnished the only music at the wedding, including the "Bridal Chorus" and the "Wedding March". Very Happy

I've played plenty of wedding receptions, but the only actual wedding I ever did, I played your two standard songs through a Leslie speaker, plus the Hawaiian Wedding Song. The poor guy committed suicide two months later and I've never done another one! Shocked

I've been playing my Pedal Steel and Lap steels in Church for over 40 years. The Steel sounds Heavenly on the old Hymns. But I also play contemporary worship music as well.

There's no greater blessing on earth than when the congregation and the band are all in one accord praising the Lord. The Holy Spirit fills the place and lives are changed.

I recall an instance while playing in church that was a bit humorous. I forget what I was playing but at one point I got up in "Hugheyland" and I heard a couple of 'amens' from the congregation. Smile

Billy, thats awesome... I’ve done both of those songs as well, with Keep Me In Your Will on YouTube...

I think that church is far and away the best place to play, and I’m
sure the congregation was blessed by hearing you play... I’m guessing
that you’ll be playing there a lot more.

For you newbies who might be tuned in, gospel music is the best music to learn on. The Holy Spirit is standing right over your shoulder urging you on. He loves it when you "make a joyful noise unto the Lord".(Psalms 98:4) Very Happy

Great to hear that, Billy.

If you wan't some very melodic, yet understandable gospel-style music to play, Google the song writer, John Peterson (who was also a lap steel player). He's the guy who wrote songs like "Heaven Came Down" and "Springs of Living Water." Alot of his songs actually lay well over a Jazz style.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JEaOlPirNzk

These songs have great melodies that vary from verse to chorus.

The Church gigs that I have done pay pretty well but they usually have a mandatory weds night rehearsal. Also you are expected to have your own in ears at the bigger places. The only problems I had at first was editing my normal speech patterns. Language and decorum are still a big deal at church gigs.

A steady church gig can bring in an easy $500 to $1000 a month to the ringers. You can always find a few sleepy pros that drove through the night to make it to the Sunday morning service.

Good for you, Billy. I was in a similar situation about four years ago. It was discovered by someone in my church family that I 'played' (I think the term was used loosely Laughing ) PSG. My name was mentioned to the Worship Leader of the church's praise band. He asked if would like to participate in a rehearsal. I said yes and played during my first church service the following Sunday. Since then, I've been serving through my playing every Sunday. Usually, the service will have 6-7 contemporary praise songs.

There two things that guide my playing during a service:

1. First and foremost, I ask my Lord if my playing for the church family is what He wants
me to do. In His words: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;..." Mt 6:33 (KJV)

2. It's not about impressing the congregation with my imagined talent. It's about
allowing my Lord to use the Gift He gave me to do His will and bring His Word
through my playing.

A YouTube of a song during which I accompanied a singer and pianist for a special dedication to a church member whom was suffering through his final days with cancer.

Keep on pickin'!

God bless you Billy. I've been playing in a cowboy church band for 6 yrs. Music draws people so we can get them into the Lord. We have been asked to play at several church events did some live playing on tow truck in parades and also played at Sedalia Mo. state fair last two years and have been asked again this yr. with Ray Hildebrand on with us. Have also did some concert's with a very good attendance. The Lord has blessed us. Hope you have as much fun worshipping the Lord as we have. Wes
