I have a bakelite Ace lapsteel that had a bad grounding problem when I got it. The reason is the strings are not grounded to the electronics. They string thru the bakelite body and thru the horseshoe pickup to the nut. The way I solved my loud buzz/hum problem was to make a steel plate that the strings pass thru then sandwich one end of a ground wire in between the string plate and the body and solder the other end to the ground to the 1/4" input jack. It is dead quiet whether I have my hands on the strings or not. Here is a picture of what I did.
