I am contemplating my first PSG purchase. I am a total beginner and saw a Maverick with 2&2 on Scotty's web site. Would this be a good choice for a beginner and would it be compatible at all with today's teaching materials?

No and no, a Maverick with 2+2 for less than $150 may be an ok buy, but not recomended.If you have $500/$700, I would go with a new Carter Starter, and if you are serious you can probably pick up a decent D10 in the $1200/$1500 range, see link below on this.

Jim, to give an example of some of the deals that are out there from time to time, Bobbe Seymour (www.steelguitar.net/)has two inexpensive guitars listed on his website right now - an older MSA and a BMI. The BMI looks like a real good deal for someone, and the old MSA would certainly be a good entry level axe, and pretty inexpensive. Most of us would recommend either of these guitars or a CArter Starter over a Maverick.

I can't comment on anything except availability......I have an early 70's Maverick 3+1 in great condition that I would like to sell. The steel is one of the earliest birdseye maple...really beautiful with a raised fretboard (I have been told that these are much better guitars than the non raised versions). The steel and the case are both in very good condition. The steel looks beautiful! All decals are in perfect condition & everything works exactly as it should with the exception of one of the set screw collars & I have a new one of those on order. It has just been set up & adjusted & with the new collar, will be workig just right! If you are interested I would sell it for $500.00 + ups.

I am a beginning pedal steel player & am selling the Maverick because...two weeks after I got it a friend sold me his Sho-Bud LDG model & I just don't need two.

Bought one 4 mons.ago its a 3*1 thats enough for me. paid $500. Ian a old beginner played some lap 40 yrs ago Thought Id give myself 1yr. before moveing Also get your self Jeff Newmans Pedal steel Techniques Had I had this 40 yrs ago I would not have lost interest back them also b0b has some great stuff All fingers and thumbs still

I too started out buying a Maverick 3x1. Spent the first year rebuilding to make it a 3x4. Wow, what a job that was! Once I was done she wouldn't stay in tune when I transported it. A friend described my machine shop work as having lots of "monkey motion," After I sat behind a couple of other steels I realized how stiff and clunky my rebuild job was. It was great training for what goes on underneath the steel but it held me back from learning what to do on top of it. So from that experience I have given up being a psg "builder" and now just want to play the thing.

I now play a Sierra Artist. Considered by many as a student or "entry level" instrument. I also have a MSA D-10 for home but the Sierra is "easy to move."

The Sierra Artist is actually a good-sized notch above any student model. I played one once that had 4+5. A very nice instrument, but a little too light for me.

Thanks for all the advice! I've decided to stay away from the Maverick. However I have yet to decide what I want to buy...so many choices!

You want three floor pedals on any starter pedal steel.
