| I bought this '47 National D8 console years ago and the body sections were loose and coming apart. After disassembling, I cleaned up the dowels, holes and mating surfaces and glued back together. Also stripped body paint and primed (I know, probably should've left original finish/paint but it's a done deal now). Been sitting like that in the shed since. Now wanting to practice non pedal so i'm fired up to complete the job. This was the cream and brown one. Any tips on how to match the correct colors? otherwise I will match up according to pics as best I can. Most of the kluson buttons are pretty corroded and I understand I can get those from Stewmac and glue or melt on. Any advice on how to have the pick ups checked? |

| I had something like yours. Mine was rough, but maybe not as bad as yours. Got tuner buttons from Kluson. For pups check, I knew the tech. at local "Guitar Center" . Stewmac's site will show you how to put buttons on. I lke mine. Joe |

Being that the original paint is gone, I'd just opt for close enough with whatever is easily sourced if you can't come up with an exact color code for the original.
The tuner buttons are pretty easy to do and lots of info here and elsewhere on the how to's.
You can do a basic test on the pickups with a multimeter set to ohms scale. The exact reading is not so important as just getting a reading. It should be in the thousands of ohms. Extremely low readings or no reading might indicate an open circuit or shorted internal windings. Another indicator that all is well would be that the reading on both pickups are in the same general ballpark. Certainly not a guarantee, but a positive indicator.

I refinished one some years ago and had no trouble finding spray can matches for the two tones. Either a big box store or an auto parts store, I don't remember which.

I'm restoring a '54 National D8 and I ended up buying three sets of tuners with metal buttons from Stew-Mac. That way, the next owners will never have to deal with tuner buttons disintegrating.
I haven't repainted it, but I'm giving it thought as the original paint is flaking pretty badly in spots. |
