Great guitars. I love mine. Had it since 1999. Outside of a couple part issues, this baby has held up trough thousands of miles traveled, extreme hot and cold gigs, dancers running into it. It still plays like it did when I bought it. I was fortunate enough to have had some long conversations with Bud and John, and a couple shorter conversations with Anne. There was nothing cooler than calling them and have Bud answer the phone.

I love my Carter S12 Universal 8X5 !

I have a 2008 Blond SD10 3&5 that plays great and stays in tune very well. I've had it for about 3yrs and no problems. I'll try later to post pics. Bob M

Bought this carter and sold it after a couple years. Freaked out and bought another one just like it with in 2 weeks after selling it.

I love my Carter S-10!

I love mine also...I have had 4 of them, 3 D10s and now this SD10. One of the best playing and sounding steels I have owned, and i have owned a bunch !

I picked up two of them directly from John and Bud at the shop in Mesquite.

I have a black D-10 Magnum with Alumitone pickups at Church that will hold it's own with any guitar in tone and feel. Sorry, I don't have any photos of it. It has a hot rod look with the aluminum grey anodized metal against the black mica. Truly a great guitar. Maybe I can remember to get photos soon and add them to this post.

To quote the great Tommy White: "Carters are pound for pound one of the best steels ever made". Would never sell mine!

I had a white and maroon D12 8 pedals & 6 knees with built for me in Dec. 2005 and still plays and stays in tune like new. I love my Carter.

I just picked up a new SHOW PRO 8X8. I have spent all my time playing it since it arrived BUT I am not in a hurry to sell my CARTER 9 X 8 (I had to remove the 9th foot pedal because I simply could make the adjustment from playing 8 pedals for 35 years). The Carter has never given me a moments trouble. I have never had to call anyone about how to deal with a problem. It stays in tune. Minimal Cabinet Drop. I
bought a flight case with it that I never needed but the wheels are nice to have.

Easy to work on. Easy to play. You could easily change the copedant yourself. Parts are available from Al Brisco.

If you might be interested in buying this steel write me. I will make you a deal. I have a GFI with the same configuration (also a very nice axe).

And John--What a guy. We met several times, and he'd call me. Probably called a lot of you guys, too. And the last thing he'd want to talk about, was a steel guitar, or a moron like me trying to learn something. He wanted to talk about his Kimbers (I'm saving up for one, John!), politics, Fox News--everyday stuff that the people who live above ground take for granted.

He was a great friend of a great friend of mine--Brother Charles Reece. Charles was the go-to guy, for push-pull guitars. I owned a couple of Carters, including an SD-10, that I insisted would work better with a half-stop, instead of half-pedaling the A pedal. It didn't work.

The Carters were great guitars--and a relatively easy way to get into a new guitar, without spending enough money to buy a car. That market seems to be gone, now. Don't we all have 6 grand to spend?

I miss John greatly. I miss his guitars.

Steve...I got my S-12 universal about 10 years ago, and although it was "Used" as such, it had "NEVER" been played. The guy I bought it from had money "BUT" he had never ever played a steel in his life...not even a non pedal. It's done alot of shows over the years. The only weak point in all the gigs was on one show one of the little brass dumbells broke. It was a Country show and another band was comming on. This gave me and the band a chance to do a "quick" repair job. We found a metal coat hanger in the changing room, broke and bent a suitable piece, and hooked it onto the pull rod. This made do for the next set. Since then I lube all the "dumbells" periodically, and have a few spare dumbells if needed.

I also have a Sho-Bud uni which I bought in 1977 here in U.K. It wasn't a pot metal 'Bud...it had tear drop levers and big pedals. On one occassion a tear drop lever snapped on me. It happens to some I guess

On the subject of carters, how many have a lacquer finish ? My red one pictured in this thread is the only one i have noticed and i dont think from the pic it is obvious its not a mica fnish.

I got my black D10 with 8/5 in late 1999. I love it. As with others, it was great talking with Bud. Mine has George L pickups. I tell people that playing the Carted is like driving a Porsche, and playing my D10 ShoBud ProIII is laike driving a Chevy pickup. I love them both! To me, Carters were the "most cluck for the buck".

Jack....I agree...I have both Universals set up in my room and play each for a while...The Bud is still good considering it was bought in 1977 and resurrected after a house fire, but when I sit back behind the Carter...it's easy peasy on the pedals and knees
