Hi,

I have a Carter S-10 with a broken connecting rod (not sure if that's the correct part name for it) on the LKR lever. There's a couple photos attached here. I think I found a place I can order a replacement from but does anyone know of a quick fix I could do in the meantime? I'm hoping to be able to use it for an upcoming show this week. I was thinking maybe a paper clip might work for a few days, but if that's a horrible idea let me know.

Thanks for your help!

Jarrod

For quick and dirty, I have used a coat hanger on a Carter. The soft metal breaks easily (bend it back and forth until it snaps) and with two pliers you can get the tight hook you need to wrap it on a Carter dogbone.
I don't recommend it for a permanent replacement but it would work fine for your immediate need.

If you don't have access to other sources, you can get steel rod at your local hobby supply store, cost you less than $1. You would want the .109" or .093" diameter, not any smaller.

Check the piece of excess rod sticking out behind the pivot point. I looks like it may be long enough to bend another hook on and just reinstall and adjust the pull. Or take the rod out and take to an Ace Hardware or other hardware store and buy a rod blank the same size. Bend the dog bone U and cut to fit. Good Luck getting it fixed and back Steelin.

Are you talking about the short rod that is pressed into the knee lever bracket? I don't see the rod that is supposed to be there. What is that black, bent-up rod? I've never seen anything like that in any Carter I have seen. That black "rod" looks as if it is going through the barrel with the socket head cap screw. That would be the rod that connects the knee lever and the cross shaft that has the string pulls. It's the same setup as the barrel in the lower left hand corner of the second pic. If that is what he is talking about, dog bones and hooked rods aren't applicable.

Maybe I'm just not seeing what you all are talking about. But that black piece, and the fact that I can't see a rod coming off that knee lever bracket, and the barrel in the bell crank, doesn't make me think he has a broken pull rod.

The dark rod is broken at the 90 deg bend where it was attached to the reverser. The broken-off piece is still stuck in the reverser. There does look to be enough extra length that you could probably just remove what's left, put another short 90 degree bend in the end and re-install it.

I would like to get a couple spare pins, dumb/barbells to have on hand. Al Brisco has a $40 minimum order, I don't need that many.....

Just pick you up a welding rod same size. That's all that is anyway. Carry the broken piece to a welding shop and they can fix you up.

I still don't understand the black rod. No Carter I have ever seen, and that's been more than a few, had anything but stainless rods for anything in the undercarriage. And look at the diameter of the black rod in relationship to the stainless rod next to it. The black rod looks larger. How they they feed it through the barrel, which is drilled for a 3/32" rod? What is the black rod made of? The broken piece in the reversing lever is not black and appears to possible be threaded. I have never seen a Carter where that tip was threaded.

I realize that none of this is necessary, but I am really curious.

Jarrod... Did you buy this guitar new? It looks to me that someone may have already repaired that reverser and replaced the rod with whatever they could find. And, look at the way the black rod is all bent up. Carter would never let that out of their factory.

Thanks for indulging me. I don't mean to be a pain in the butt.

also to understand the issue, that black rod is not anything I have ever seen on any Carter I have owned, which is 4...Can you snap a photo with more detail showing that rod with a wider view ?

Coat hanger is an easy alternative glad it worked. I would use it more often but it can't be threaded @ 4:40! If you can find the right E-Clip size for coat hanger , you can use that to secure the rod on the knee lever end. This is standard protocol for Emmons Legrandes. It really doesn't much matter what rod you use ( not drill rod though) it's the function that matters. The coat hanger will probably last 100 years !

PS, run that coat hanger on a wire wheel and it will shine shine shine ! Smile
